Long before Busby Berkeley dazzled Hollywood audiences with his movie musicals, Jacob Obrecht may have created the original “production number” with his Missa Sub tuum praesidium, which begins with three solo voices and then adds an additional singer for each of the subsequent movements.

Medieval ensemble Euouae (Steven Sven Olbash, director) presents the composition in the context of the Gregorian chant on which it is based, using 10th century manuscript notation and innovative rehearsal techniques to recreate the ecstatic spontaneity of the earliest performing traditions.

Friday, November 18th at 8:00 p.m. @ Old First Concerts, San Francisco ($14-$17)
